Sarcasm is frequently confused with irony, thus to be able to fully understand it, it is essential to get a clear demarcation of irony first. Webster defines irony as “the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning” (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary). Irony is used in a wide sense ranging from Socratic irony, situational irony, dramatic irony, various forms of parody, humour and so on (Wilson, 2006:1725). Sarcasm is an everyday phenomenon, yet many people cannot understand it and its purpose wholly. However, there is more and more research on it examining the subjects’ reaction to such utterances. Recently, it has become a popular topic. Even in movies, there are more fictional characters created with a sarcastic personality, which has gained great popularity by the audience, than before. One of these characters is Dr. Gregory House from the TV show House M. D.hu_HU
