| dc.description.abstract | This thesis, based on Martin Amis's "Money: A Suicide Note", is going to explore the issues with masculinity in the 1980s. Firstly, drawing upon the research of Raewyn Connell, Donald L. Mosher, and Mark Sirkin, hegemonic masculinity and hypermasculinity, the two quintessential terms in the period, are going to be defined and exemplified through the male characters of "Money". Nevertheless, this assertive masculinity, through post-modernist techniques, is destroyed in the novel by revealing how the male characters are experiencing what has been called the crisis of masculinity. In addition, the novel also deconstructs toxic masculinity by offering a more feminine and emotionally less oppressive masculinity through John Self the anti-hero of the genre of 'lad lit'. | |
