| dc.description.abstract | Scleroderma is a disease of the connective tissue that is characterized by autoimmune reactions, excess collagen deposition and vascular hyperactivity and phenomena. It can affect virtually anyone at any age although having a predisposition towards women in their middle age. Scleroderma has a plethora of symptoms in the oral cavity and generally the facial region and although it is not curable due to the fact that most of the fibrosis caused by the disease is irreversible, it can get better with the proper treatment. In general, scleroderma can be identified relatively easy on the dental chair, simply because of the fact that some symptoms are clearly visible and undeniably belong to the systemic sclerosis. Besides clinical examinations, there is a series of radiographical examinations that can be performed as well together with blood tests and biopsies which require the consultation with a doctor and can lead us to the diagnosis of scleroderma. Having said that, there is a variety of treatment options as well for scleroderma targeted towards both medical and dental fields and can include conservative treatments like different types of drugs or surgical interventions but again they are not for total cure but rather for a limitation or slowing down of the progression of the disease. | hu_HU |
