Natural Rights in Dystopian Literature
Absztrakt
My main objective is to investigate how the dystopian worlds created by Aldous Huxley in Brave New World and by George Orwell in Nineteen Eighty-Four are in direct contradiction with the values of liberal democracy. In other words, my intention is manifold and thus I am obliged to break down my work into two main parts. First, I aim to conduct a thorough investigation of the social contract theory from Thomas Hobbes’ and John Locke’s point of view in order to obtain a deeper understanding of the natural right concept and to understand how these Enlightenment thinkers justify the legitimacy of and the need for bodies possessing political power in all societies. Second, I shall conduct a comprehensive analysis of the aforementioned novels from the point of view of democratic values and human rights and explain how the state administrations of these imagined worlds deviate from democratic values and violate the natural right of the citizens.
