Indigenous Hungarian Yellow hens (n=436) and Ross broilers (n=103) were genotyped for the A570C single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) and for the G645T non-synonymous SNP in insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP2) genes. IGF1 is a member of the polypeptide hormone family with structural similarity to insulin. Concentrations of IGF1 and various polymorphisms of the gene have previously been associated with several growth traits in chickens, whereas IGFBPs can modulate the bioactivity and growth-promoting effects of circulating IGF1. PCR-RFLP method with HinfI and BseGI restriction enzymes was applied for genotyping. Significantly (P<0.05) different IGF1 and IGFBP2 allele frequencies were detected between the dual-purpose Hungarian Yellow and the broiler populations, as IGF1 C and IGFBP2 G alleles were fixed in Hungarian Yellow, while in broilers their prevalence was 0.10 and 0.92 respectively. Furthermore, IGBP2 genotype was associated (P<0.05) with live weight at 38 days, carcass weight and breast muscle weight in the broiler population. Despite its low polymorphism information content (0.12), IGFBP2 polymorphism can be valuable for selection programmes in broilers.hu_HU
