A magyar diákok 1623-as franekeri megjelenése a peregrinatio hungarica újabb fejezetének jelentette nyitányát. A jó fordításhoz elengedhetetlen a megfelelő nyelvismeret. A válaszért elég fellapozni a fontosabb magyar bibliográfiákat. Ezek több olyan mű címét is közlik, melyeket bizonyosan holland nyelvű forrásmunka alapján ültették át magyarra. E munkák közöl a jelen dolgozat három peregrinus négy fordításának bemutatására vállalkozott, melyek a következők: Szokolyai Anderko István (1621-?): A Szent Bibliának ó testamentomi könyveiböl eggybe-szedegettetott áhitatos könyörgések (Leiden, 1648), Sérelmes lelkeket gyógyétó Balsamom (Leiden, 1648), Diószegi Kis István (?1635-1698): Lelki fegyver (Lőcse, 1703, 4. kiadás), valamint Buzinkai György (?1701-1768): Az elveszett bünös megkerestetett és megtartatott (Amsterdam, 1735). The enrollment of the first Hungarian students in the University of Franeker in the year 1623 marks the beginning of a new chapter of the peregrinatio hungarica. The study tours to The Netherlands played an important part in the intellectual development of the Hungarians until the beginning of the 19th century and even had a beneficent effect on the Hungarian Protestant Church that was going through a very hard time due to attempts to annihilate it by the Court of Vienna. In the course of the 17th and 18th century quite a great number of students from Hungary and Transylvania spent either a short or a longer time at the Dutch universities and Athenaea Illustria. In Franeker alone they numbered more than 1200 in total, not counting the peregrini who went to Amsterdam, Deventer, Groningen, Harderwijk, Leiden and Utrecht. With the exception of a few, most Hungarians were diligent students and had a good reputation in The Netherlands. Evidence of this are the many academic publications, respectively of books that they were given by others, books that they wrote themselves and not in the last place books that they translated. From the prefaces of the translations we see how the students felt morally obliged to help their native country and to promote the intellectual interaction between Hungary and the European countries, since they translated works that Hungarian readers would not be able to read in the original language due to a lack of knowledge of that language. In order to be able to translate at a high level it is essential to have an adequate knowledge of the language in question. It was known that the Hungarian students were very proficient in Latin and when they had the opportunity to continue their studies at a Western European university or Athenaea Illustria, they could besides their Latin also become acquainted with English, German or Dutch. The popularity of the Dutch language in Hungary and Transylvania in the 17th and 18th century suggests that many of the peregrini made use of this opportunity. Considering the number of peregrini it is not surprising that knowledge of the Dutch language so far away from The Netherlands, was so widespread. Many of the students boarded with families and if they wanted to communicate with the family members who usually had no knowledge of Latin, they were compelled to learn Dutch. The question is not so much if the students had knowledge of the language but rather if they were enterprising enough to use the Dutch language not only to communicate with the family they lodged with, but also to translate books into Hungarian. The answer can be found in the well-known Hungarian bibliographies. They give the titles of various books that were translated from Dutch into Hungarian. In this research they concern three students and their four translations: István Szokolyai Anderko (1621-?): A Szent Bibliának ó testamentomi könyveiböl eggybe-szedegettetott áhitatos könyörgések (Leiden, 1648), Sérelmes lelkeket gyógyétó Balsamom (Leiden, 1648), István Diószegi Kis (ca. 1635-1698): Lelki fegyver (Lőcse, 1703, 4th Edition), bzw. György Buzinkai (ca. 1701-1768): Az elveszett bünös megkerestetett és megtartatott (Amsterdam, 1735). Although there were a few initiatives, the translations from Dutch into Hungarian in early modern history are, unfortunately, still a terra incognita in the landscape of cultural and literary historical research of both countries. Although quite a lot is known of the lives and works of the students, there is but little information about their sojourn in The Netherlands that was so important for their translations. Notwithstanding these limiting factors, this research can give positive findings about the students as well as their translations. There are among other things the finding of debates unknown so far and the discovery of various contacts between the students during their peregrinations but above all the important role played by their professors in the selection of the sources to be translated. With all four translations we now know exactly which Dutch sources were used. It has also become clear that the sources used were compilations of originally German and English texts. After parallel research of the Dutch and Hungarian texts it became clear which structural and contextual changes were made by the student translators.en
