Chronic kidney disease is chronic deterioration of renal function which can progress into end-stage renal disease. Patients with chronic kidney disease are predisposed to cardiac rhythm disorders, including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular arrhythmia. There is a high risk of thromboembolism in chronic kidney disease patients, especially those developing atrial fibrillation. However, the significant co-existing bleeding risk in these patients also makes choosing a prophylactic anticoagulant therapy challenging to physicians. The complex management plan involves correction of modifiable factors or underlying conditions, withdrawal or cautious usage of nephrotoxic drugs and drugs causing QT prolongation, treatment for the complications of chronic kidney disease, adjustment of metabolic and electrolyte disturbances, renal replacement therapies, anti-arrhythmic medications, catheter ablation and implantable devices, and thromboembolism prophylaxis.
