Absztrakt

Literary translation is a special field of translation. It has got a lot of problems, a lot of rules, which makes it different to create a good and authentic target language text. I think, primarily, the translator’s task is not to translate the source language text into the target language, but to match the rules of the given literary work. Apart from this, the translator has to master the Hungarian language empathically well in order to create a perfect target language text. For my thesis I chose to translate one of the short stories of Agatha Christie. I made a lot of research on literary translation, on its problems, techniques and theories. In the following parts, I am going to give a well formed target language text based on the original English story. The next part of the thesis consists of the comparative analysis of the published translation, by Németh Zoltán and Varga István, in 1997, and my version of Christie’s short story. In this analysis I am going to show the differences between the two Hungarian texts. My aim is to enumerate examples of translation operations, e.g.: generalization, concretization, omission, and to answer the purposes related to literary translation.
