Absztrakt

In the first chapter of this thesis, I am going to examine the process of translation from a cultural point of view and the use of two basic translation strategies – domestication and foreignization –, and attempt to highlight the responsibility of the translator in using either of the two techniques. In the second chapter, I am going to take a look at general characteristics of children’s/young adult novels and the fantasy genre, and examine how the previously mentioned issues are handled in these particular literary works. Finally, in the third chapter, I am going to discuss how these were resolved specifically in the Hungarian translation of the Harry Potter series. I will analyse the original English terminology and their Hungarian equivalents, attempt to explain what caused challenges or problems for the translator, what solutions he came up with, and how effective these solutions turned out to be.
