The metabolic syndrome and its components, a part of the group of diseases known as non-communicable diseases, are signs and symptoms that are driven by forces that include rapid urbanization and the globalization of unhealthy lifestyles. These components may manifest themselves as raised blood pressure, increased fasting blood glucose, elevated blod lipids and overweight and obesity, eventually leading to become cardiovascuIar diseases and diabetes, which alone account for more than 19 million deaths each year. This review shows that most newer research litterature points in the direction of recommending a lower total intake of all forms of carbohydrates.
