dc.description.abstract	Értekezésem a magyar hadifoglyok helyzetét, életét hivatott bemutatni Olaszországban az első világháború idején. A témát egy hadifogoly, a budapesti 1. honvéd gyalogezred kötelékében harcoló Kozeschnik János őrvezető története alapján hat hadifogolytábor — Civita Castellana, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Padula, Vittoria, Casale d’Altamura és Cassino — részletes vizsgálatára szűkítettem le. Az értekezésnek három tudományos célkitűzése van: 1) összegezni a vizsgált hadifogolytáborokról eddig megjelent tudományos eredményeket és 2) kiegészíteni ezeket saját, új megállapításokkal, valamint 3) közreadni a hadifogolytáborokban internált magyar hadifoglyok neveinek listáját. Habár az első világháborús hadifogságról már több monográfia, tanulmány és doktori disszertáció is született, továbbra is vannak kihasználatlan források, úgy levéltári hivatalos iratok, mint hadifoglyoktól származó autobiografikus források (naplók, visszaemlékezések és levelezések). E forrásokat egymással összevetve életmódtörténeti kérdésekre kerestem a választ: Mikor érkeztek a hadifoglyok az adott táborba? Hányan voltak? Milyen ellátásban részesültek (szállás, élelmezés, ruházkodás stb.)? Mivel töltötték az időt; voltak-e hitéleti, szórakozási, sportolási, nyelvtanulási stb. lehetőségeik? Dolgoztatták-e őket? Vesztette-e ott életét magyar hadifogoly? Került-e onnan haza magyar katona hadifogolycsere útján? Mikor, milyen okokból szállították el onnan a hadifoglyokat? A hadifogolytáborok bemutatása mellett a hadifoglyok albániai munkavégzését és az olasz kormány és katonai hatóságok 1915 nyarán meghozott, a hadifoglyok ellátására vonatkozó rendeleteit is megvizsgálom. A vizsgálat hipotézise, hogy a magyar hadifoglyok a körülményekhez képest jó és emberséges ellátásban részesültek a Kozeschnik János által megjárt hadifogolytáborokban csak részben igazolódott be. A hadifoglyoktól és a táborokba látogató személyektől származó források sok esetben mondanak ellen az olasz forrásokban lefestett idilli képnek. Az olaszok eleinte valóban igyekeztek jó és emberséges körülményeket teremteni a hadifoglyok számára, ám a háború előrehaladtával ez egyre kevésbé mondható el, ami nemcsak az élelemhiányra és az elharapódzó járványokra vezethető vissza, hanem némi szándékosságra is. Név szerint 2.408 magyar hadifoglyot sikerült beazonosítani a vizsgált táborokban. / The aim of my thesis is to present the life of Hungarian prisoners of war in Italy during the First World War. Based on the story of a Hungarian soldier, János Kozeschnik, who fought in the honvéd regiment n. 1 of Budapest as lance corporal, I reduced the topic to a detailed examination of six internment camps: Civita Castellana, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Padula, Vittoria, Casale d’Altamura and Cassino. The scientific objectives are to summarize the results of other researchers about the selected internment camps, to add on my own, novel findings, and to make a list of the Hungarian soldiers who were detained in those camps. Although several studies and even doctoral theses have dealt with the life of POWs in the Great War, there are still a lot of unused sources, including official documents of the Italian government and military authorities, and POW-sources (diaries, memoirs, and letters). By comparing the sources with each other, I aim to explore the way of life of POWs through the following questions: When did they arrive in the camp? How many prisoners were there? How did the Italians treat them (accommodation, nutrition, clothing etc.)? How did they spend their time? Did they have access to religious services, entertainment, sport, language learning etc.? Was any Hungarian soldier swapped? When and why were the prisoners relocated to other camps? In addition to presenting the selected internment camps, I also examine the employment of POWs in Albania, and the rulings of the Italian authorities regarding the treatment of POWs, adopted in the summer of 1915. The hypothesis of my work, namely that the prisoners received a relatively good and humane treatment in the selected camps was only partly confirmed. In many cases the sources of the POWs and the persons who visited the camps contradict the idyllic picture we find in the Italian sources. First the Italians truly aimed to create good and humane conditions for the prisoners. Later, however, as the war went on, this became less and less the case due to food shortage, pandemics and even the deliberate decision of the captors. I managed to identify by name 2.408 Hungarian POWs in the selected camps.
