The process of literary translation is an ongoing effort of the literary translator in which their task is to convey not just the content but also all nuances of the original work such as effect, style, humour, historical, social, cultural context and so on. Although it is still a controversial topic, Ildikó Pusztai-Varga claims that literary translation requires several competencies which enable the translator to create a target language text that fulfils the demands and expectations of the readers. Apart from the competencies, the knowledge and appropriate use of certain translation techniques are also crucially relevant. These techniques are used in the translation of even the simplest sentences and frequently without the translator’s conscious intention. The translator, however, may encounter difficulties throughout the process of translation that demand the conscious use of transfer operations named after Kinga Klaudy that are also translation techniques carried out by the translator in order to transform a source language text into a target language text. Klaudy divides these techniques into two main types: grammatical and lexical transfer operations. In my thesis, after presenting the main competencies of the literary translator, I would like to introduce some of the lexical transfer operations including culture-specific ones by demonstrating the lexical difficulties with specific examples from literary works and then providing possible translations for the problematic parts with the use of the above-mentioned transfer operations.
