MÚLT – JELEN – JÖVŐ: 15 ÉVES A KERPELY KÁLMÁN SZAKKOLLÉGIUM
(2025-06-28) Széles, Adrienn; Horváth, Éva; Zagyi, Péter
Student organizations – and within them, colleges for advanced studies – play a special role in the life of higher education institutions. These communities offer not only opportunities for talented and motivated students to deepen their academic pursuits, but also convey core values: a commitment to science, a sense of social responsibility, and a persistent drive for intellectual growth. Colleges for advanced studies build bridges between theoretical knowledge and practical experience, between individual ambition and shared purpose – all within a supportive, inspiring environment. Throughout our university years, these communities become spaces where we learn not only to study, but to think, create, debate, and collaborate. This is why such colleges are not merely academic forums – they are transformative communities. They are places where friendships are forged, life-long connections are made, and professional journeys begin. Since its founding in 2010, the Kálmán Kerpely College for Advanced Studies at the University of Debrecen has played a distinguished role in fulfilling this mission. Following the intellectual legacy of its namesake, the College has provided its members with both high-level academic enrichment and meaningful community experiences over the past fifteen years. Its anniversary offers a fitting opportunity to reflect on its history, its impact, and all it has contributed – to individuals, to communities, and, in a broader sense, to the university as a whole.

    FENNTARTHATÓ EGYETEMEK: MAGYARORSZÁGI HELYZETKÉP
    (2025-06-28) Soós, Erika Mária
The current population of the Earth is 8.2 billion. Although scientific calculations are now available that suggest that overpopulation alone would not be a barrier to sustainability if significant global changes were made (for example, in economic and consumption patterns), the sustainability challenges remain complex and require a comprehensive approach. As learning organisations, universities have a key role in promoting environmental and social sustainability through their teaching and research activities, shaping future generations' attitudes. This research aims to analyse Hungarian higher education institutions' sustainability strategies and measures and explore further directions and development opportunities for strengthening universities' sustainability efforts. In the course of the research, I am looking for answers to the following questions: How sustainable are Hungarian universities today? How are they performing in the light of different ranking methodologies? What are the similarities in current strategies, development directions and operations? What sustainability initiatives are Hungarian universities implementing? What good practices can be identified, and what innovative approaches can be taken to improve sustainability? What could be the role of university libraries and university publishing in the rankings?

ISMERETLEN ADATTÖRMELÉKEK A 17. SZÁZAD MÁSODIK FELÉNEK UNITÁRIUS ISKOLA- ÉS PEREGRINÁCIÓTÖRTÉNETÉHEZ
    (2025-06-28) Szigeti Molnár, Dávid
The Unitarian College of Cluj (Kolozsvár), the sole Antitrinitarian institution to sponsor students’ peregrination, saw a significant setback in the early 1660s (due to a combination of fire damage, the bubonic plague, and an erosion of discipline). As a result, Unitarian peregrination temporarily “showed a tendency of decline”. From the 1670s, however, Unitarian students were again regularly sent to study abroad at the expense of the parish of Cluj, but before they left, the peregrines had to issue a pledge, a so-called promissory note (reversalis, obligatoria), to the ecclesia, pledging faithfulness and obedience, primarily; a practice also known in other denominations. These notes are usually – and correctly – regarded as formulaic in nature, but they contain the occasional interesting detail, such as the amount of the “scholarship” granted, the duration of enrolment and the required languages to be learned by the sponsored student. This study offers a systematic overview of these details.

    A KISZ AZ IPARMŰVÉSZETI FŐISKOLÁN
    (2025-06-28) Szécsényi, András
The aim of this study is to present the operation of the Hungarian Communist Youth League (Magyar Kommunista Ifjúsági Szövetség ‒ KISZ) of the Hungarian University of Arts and Design) (Magyar Iparművészeti Főiskola) and its impact on student life. The paper is based ont he author’s basic research in the MOME Archives, and the archival source material is based partly on the documents of the central offices of the university and partly on the documents of the KISZ. Consequently, it is primarily a matter of examining organisational documents; in the absence of ego documents, there was little opportunity to hear the narratives of the participants in student life dominated by the KISZ. The study primarily seeks to answer the question of how and within what framework the Communist Party organisation functioned at the College. On the other hand, it also asks to what extent the ideological framework, which was loosened during the Kádár era, influenced the art students in their everyday lives and how this affected the life of the youth.

HOLLANDIAI DIÁKOK A DEBRECENI NYÁRI EGYETEMEN AZ 1930-AS ÉS 40-ES ÉVEKBEN
    (2025-06-28) Bozzay, Réka
From 1935 onwards, students from the Netherlands regularly visited the Debrecen Summer University. Imre Tarnóczy, a member of the board of the International Students' Club in Utrecht, played an important role in recruiting the students and organizing the trip. Tarnóczy, and later Elly Hoekstra, also took the Hungarian language proficiency exam at the Summer University. Some of the students visiting here came from the Dutch Asian colonies. The students attended language and country studies courses, went to the open-air bath, and visited the Hortobágy and several cities in Northeastern Hungary. The local and national press reported on their stay, and interviews and photos were taken with them. The Dutch did not come to Debrecen during World War II, and we only see them at the Summer University in 1947 again. F

    GEOGRÁFIA  A DEBRECENI EGYETEMEN 1914–2024
    (2025-06-28) Bozzay, Réka
Professor József Lóki's book was published on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of geography education in Debrecen. The work provides an overview of the teaching and research work carried out at the department and then at the institute. At the end of each major chapter it presents the biographies, scientific activities and publications of those working there. The volume covers a long period of time, during which the political system changed several times, which was also reflected in ideological issues related to education. The author focuses on the development of student numbers in certain periods, shows how the institute's equipment and infrastructure changed, and how both students and researchers managed to gain recognition at national and international level.

The UNITY OF THE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND THE CITY OF PÉCS AGAINST THE TRIANON PEACE TREATY DURING THE INTERWAR PERIOD
    (2024-12-31) Raposa, Vivien
In the Horthy era, the maintenance of irredentist goals became crucial among university students. The youth were socialized in a completely different life situation than the adult generation because they had lived through the First World War and the Trianon Peace Treaty as children. In this way, the desire for revision had to be constantly kept alive among youngsters because many of them had grown up without remembering Great Hungary. The aim was also to reinforce the feeling of offense that they did not accept the immutability of the borders. Due to this policy, the government and local city councils wanted the youth to dominate in spreading revisionist ideas.During my present study, I will describe how the city administration of Pécs, and the students collaborated in expressing irredentist purposes. The city council expected the youth not just to take part in various national holidays such as the Heroes’ Memorial Day, the celebration of March 15, or the commemoration of the martyrs of Arad, but also emerge as a key factor in the organisation of ceremonies. In addition, the students regularly participated in the demonstrations, which were organized by the Pécs Group of the Hungarian Revision League and the Pécs-Baranya Circle of the Hungarian National Federation. However, from the beginning of the 1930s, the students started to be more and more active in propagating irredentism, so it also became common for them to hold their revision meetings.

ATHÉN – CAMBRIDGE – HELIKON. SÁROSPATAK ISKOLAVÁROS JELZŐINEK ETIMOLÓGIÁJA
    (2024-12-31) Bolvári-Takács, Gábor
The character of Sárospatak as a school town is well known. It is therefore not surprising that the settlement has been given different signs over time - to convey the high quality of education. The best known is the "Bodrogparti Athens", which has been used in this form since the end of the 19th century, but whose origins go back to Comenius' stay in Sárospatak. In his welcome speech delivered in 1650, the Czech-Moravian teacher called the school Rákóczi-Athenaeum, which term can be considered the etymological antecedent of the later indicative structure. The spread of the term "Hungarian Cambridge", which was prominent between the two world wars, was closely related to the school development ideas of Count Kunó Klebelsberg, Minister of Culture in the 1920s and 30s, especially the establishment of the English Boarding School. Regardless, references to the famous English school town as an example to be followed appear in Sárospatak already at the beginning of the 20th century. Perhaps the least known phrase "The Helikon of Hegyalja" is a poetic word creation of Mihály Vitéz Csokonai, from the 18th to the 19th century. The former Sárospatak student poet's attraction to Tokaj wine can also be sensed in the expression. The announcement presents the history of the development of the three adjectives, their use at the time and their afterlife today.

Egy BIBLIOGRÁFIA S ÓRAREND, ÉS AZ EMBER, AKI MÖGÖTTE VAN: DR. KOVÁCS SÁNDOR DEBRECENI JOGTANÁR ÉLETE, LEÁNYA, ILONA VISSZAEMLÉKEZÉSEI ALAPJÁN
    (2024-12-31) Magyar, Balázs Dávid
The present article intends to illuminate the colorful life of dr. Sándor Kovács, who was the first professor of the Department of the Roman Law founded in 1875 at Reformed College of Debrecen. The study focuses on the forty years’ service of Kovács pursued in the „Calvinist Rome”. Doing so, the paper scrutinizes the history and evolution of the law school in Debrecen before the arrival of dr. Kovács. Secondly, by using the manuscripts of one of his children, Ilona, the study depicts the personal and family life of the professor bedecked by the touching memories of storytelling, vineyards, and long walks in the Great Forest of Debrecen. Nevertheless, the paper takes into consideration that dr. Kovács as a high-esteemed professor of the roman law delivered lectures and publications of general interest. Creating a novelty in the research, the study collects and publishes the bibliography of dr. Kovács’s printed works together with his academic lectures in a detailed, chronological list.

    (2024-12-31) Keresztes, Csaba
In the first years of the 1970s, especially on the day of the national holiday on March 15, large-scale celebratory and at the same time protest movements and parades of young people took place in the streets of the Hungarian capital. In the beginning, the authorities only imposed punishments on a few individuals, which were considered light at the time, but in 1972, significant prison sentences were also imposed. In 1973 and 1974, they tried to prevent street demonstrations as a preventive measure. During 1972, disciplinary sanctions were imposed on many students. The ministry in charge of education tried to coordinate disciplinary reprisals, and the process of retorts was regulated centrally. In the process, dozens of students suffered punishments, including expulsion.

30 ÉVES A TISZÁNTÚLI NÖVÉNYVÉDELMI FÓRUM
    (2025-12-28) Kövics, György; Tarcali, Gábor
The 30th anniversary of the Trans-Tisza Plant Protection Forum (30th TNF) was jointly organised by the Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences of the University of Debrecen (University of Debrecen) and the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania (EMTE) on 15-16 October 2025 in Târgu Mureș. The Plant Protection Forum, which has been held continuously for three decades (raised to an international level every three years during the period), will be held annually from 2025. Consequently, the 30th TNF was also the 12th IPPS (International Plant Protection Symposium). In 1868, higher education for farmers was launched in the Trans-Tisza region to create the best, always modern agriculture. To help with this, we started the series of TNF (IPPS) events in 1996, the aim of which is to combine the results of modern science with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and the plant protection of organic farming systems (Eco-Farming), which continue to be offered in the city of Debrecen in the future.

    A DEBRECENI EGYETEM NEGYEDSZÁZADOS JUBILEUMA 2000–2025: AZ ELSŐ REKTORI CIKLUS 2000. JANUÁR 1 – 2001. JÚLIUS 31
    (2025-12-28) Fésüs, László
A new era of higher education in Debrecen began in 2000 – decades after the 1912 founded state university was split into several institutions in 1950 – the Debrecen University was established from four independent institutions, offering the broadest range of study programs in the country with five university faculties, three college faculties, nine institutes and three associated institutions. This study reviews the preliminary steps which had been taken to prepare for the institutional integration within the framework of the Debrecen Universitas Association and the Debrecen University Association, describes the circumstances surrounded the failure of the direct integration of church institutions, and details the events connected to the launch of the new university, also presenting the recollections of those involved in the university leadership at the time. The success of the Debrecen University integration was based on its special characteristics, such as broad-based leadership, close cooperation of rectors elected for a short period from different fields of science, highly decentralized management, the establishment of the Medical and Health Sciences Center  and  the Agricultural Sciences Center – which combined high-level clinical work and agricultural activities, respectively, with the function of related faculties –, and an infrastructural investment program that enabled advances in the majority of educational areas and focused on support of scientific research. Based on the structural decisions, internal integration processes were launched for consolidated operation of informatics, the libraries and language departments, and in the activities of specialty coordination centers, to facilitate cooperation in educational programs and research work.  A constructive and harmonious relationship had been developed with the newly formed university-level students’ union and, within the framework of a collective agreement with the institution's employees. The cooperation agreement with the city of Debrecen, the interconnection with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and participation in the founding of the European University Association were of decisive importance in the university's external relations. The joint works in developing the identity of the University of Debrecen, the creation of symbols and brand images linked to the historical Debrecen Reformed College resulted in trust-based cooperation and breaking down of barriers between the integrating communities of scholars, researchers, students, and employees.

GONDOLATOK A KEZDETEKRŐL, AZ 1956-BAN VÉGZETTEK VASDIPLOMÁJÁNAK ÁTADÁSA ALKALMÁBÓL
    (2025-12-28) Schalbert, József
The Georgikon, founded in 1797 in Keszthely by the Festetics family, the agricultural college established in 1818 in Mosonmagyaróvár by Prince Albert Casimir of Saxony-Teschen, and later the one founded in 1868 in Pallag by the city of Debrecen, all played a significant role in advancing Hungarian agriculture throughout the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. These academies were shut down in 1948–1949, following the land reform of 1945. However, with the reorganization of socialist agriculture and the push for collectivization, it became necessary to restart agricultural education. This led to Presidential Council Decree No. 9 in 1953, which authorized the reestablishment of regional agricultural academies. The process was swift, and the academy in Debrecen was the first to reopen − ironically turning the last into the first. Acting on the instructions of then-Minister of Agriculture Ferenc Erdei, a committee was set up to determine whether the half-finished agricultural secondary school in Pallag − damaged during the war − or the one on Böszörményi Road would be more suitable for reopening the academy. In hindsight, the committee’s decision to choose the Böszörményi Road location proved wise, as it offered vast development potential. This potential was successfully realized by István Bencsik, who − based on Decree No. 35 − oversaw the transformation of the institution into a university-level college. Thanks to prioritized government investment, the new institution became a true jewel of Hungarian agricultural education.

AZ ÚJ DEBRECENI EGYETEM NEGYEDSZÁZADOS JUBILEUMA: ELŐZMÉNYEK
    (2025-12-28) Gaál, Botond
The quarter-century commemoration refers to the fact that the University of Debrecen started operating as universitas officially, i.e. according to laws implemented by the state. The reunification actually took place in 2000, therefore, now is indeed the time to commemorate the re-establishment of the unified University of Debrecen. However, prior to this, certain events had already taken place that led directly to the establishment of a unified university.  But to where and when can we put the initiation of this process? Can we link it to a certain date? The answer is yes. It may also be interesting to note that these lines are written by someone who has been involved from the very beginning and has been able to work on the re-establishment of the various 'universities' operating in different parts of our city.
