The Representation of the Indian Sharma Family in Netflix’s Bridgerton
Fekete, Boglárka; Hudácskó, Brigitta; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
This thesis examines the historical accuracy of the Netflix series Bridgerton, specifically the portrayal of the Indian Sharma family. The series provides an insight into the lives of the Indian family, how they are dealing with the new English upper-class society, and the challenges they face in fitting in. However, it is essential to consider whether people of Indian origin could have lived in England in the 19th century. The study also explores the possibility of interracial marriages between Indians and English people at the time, such as those between Mary Sheffield and Kate Sharma’s father in the series or between Kate and Anthony Bridgerton. The first part of the paper provides the historical background and the genre of the series, and towards the end of the thesis, I concentrate on the character of Edwina, “the diamond of the season.”

The Stereotypical Depictions of Anthropomorphic Animals in Contemporary Animated Cartoon Movies
Lentvorszki, Noel; Orosz-Réti, Zsófia; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
In my Thesis, I tried to shed light on the stereotypical portrayal of animals in modern contemporary animated cartoon movies. I examined three movies and the following movies are: Zootopia, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon. Despite the stereotypical portrayal of different kinds of animals, gender issues also present in the three movies. The reason why I decided to write about this topic is that we have a general understanding of specific groups, ethnic races and other various factors and I wanted to break down or at least attempt to think differently and never judge somebody by appearance.

Unstable Structures Hidden Behind Polished Surfaces: Manifestations of Capitalist Dynamics and Possibilities of Trauma Re-enactment in Parasite (2019)
Józsa, Barbara; Kalmár, György; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
One of the biggest, openly unacknowledged fears in contemporary society can be related to the rapid rising of a new class-in-the-making: the precariat. Parasite not only presents members of the precariat as victims of the system but also illustrates their strength by way of associating them with cockroaches—a connotation that makes them appear as rather dangerous (political) monsters whose unstable identities provide ways of adaptation to new set of situations, thus empowering them. Since the majority of the film’s story unfolds in the Park house, more emphasis is given to the examination of the environment through which a parallel can be drawn between the gothic castle and the Park house, revealing it both as a locus of power and ruin. Within the building, considerable amount of unease is produced by the deceitful outward appearance of both humans and inanimate objects in the film, while further tension is generated by the fluctuations in hierarchical levels and the unpredictable shifts in genre—all of which re-create and transform the instability inherent in the structure of the capitalist system into a cinematic experience. The film’s last scenes reveal the aftermath of the crisis, a reproductive dynamism becomes apparent in the way order and structures are repeated within the framework of the Park house based on the logic of the (stage-based) development of production that also eventuate the development of society in Marxist theory. This repetitive pattern, commonly found in gothic texts, has the potential to facilitate a processing of personal as well as of socio-cultural trauma through the repetitive merging of past and present where the past can re-gain its immediacy. Thus, Parasite not only provides a critique of the system but also opens up a space in which the problems arising from the workings of neoliberal capitalism can impose their urgency on the present, while an opportunity is also created for the revision of the past and its problem-solving strategies in hope of a better future.

Video Games in Second Language Acquisition
Olasz, Gábor; Balogh, Erzsébet; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
My thesis will explore the potential of video games in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), how they can be used in teaching English as a Second Language (L2) and how much impact these games already have on learners according to themselves even with the lack of focus on video games by most school systems. Using a questionnaire I gathered data about 24 university students, focusing on their habits and past experiences with video games, the effects of such video games on their English vocabulary and as students, asking for their perspective on whether video games can be used as teaching material. After articulating the most important points and presenting each and every answer I received on the questionnaire and analyzed them, I concluded that video games can indeed be used as teaching materials, there are multiple ways to use them, but it is highly advised to keep them mainly as homework exercises.

The English It-cleft and the Hungarian Structural Focus
Kovács, Bence; Tóth, Enikő; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
This thesis discusses the English It-cleft and the Hungarian structural focus constructions. Both sentence structures are being explained from a linguistic perspective, mentioning several linguistic features, including the two most important ones which they share, which are exhaustive identification and contrast. Furthermore, the thesis also provides a brief description of how these constructions differ from other, very similar ones within the same language. After a thorough description, the thesis discusses the results of a case study. Twenty It-cleft sentences taken from books of English literature are being analysed to see if translators used the structural focus or if they offered a different type of construction after converting the text from one language to the other.

The Correlation Between Fictitious and Real-Life Violence as Portrayed by the U.S. Media
Bathó, Barna Béla; Pataki, Éva; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
The topic of my thesis is the correlation between fictitious and real-life violence as portrayed by the U.S. media, specifically journals, and studies. My main focuses include how and what violence gets portrayed in games in general, how that violence then gets reported in various newspapers or scholarly works, how various online activities and most modern video games have been intertwined, and what other forms of violence - including electronic - are around. I shall argue that video games as a medium should not be accountable for the possible crimes they influence as fantasy and reality must never be correlated and the different ways various outlets of media coverage chooses to interpret and report these crimes are often biased against works of interactive fiction and quite counterproductive due to their overly sensational style. My analysis is based on comparing studies and occasionally debunking findings. I will also, generally, explain theories most scholars use when writing about this topic, and at times include other scholars' opinions about those theories and their legitimacy or relevance.

Political Reality in Comics: Debunking the Superhero Myths in an Evolving Medium
Galgóczy, Vivien; Mathey , Éva; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
This thesis investigates how significant historical events such as the World War II influenced comic books as a medium. It also emphasizes the political messages represented in comic books while distinguising between art with a message and propaganda. The examples of superheroes created to address historical issues and empower individuals include Captain America and Wonder Woman. The thesis analyzes how comics have changed as a representation of current American culture as a result of the shift in medium by exploring comics interpreted to movie screens.

Irony and the Afterlife of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Oláh, Judit Ágnes; Orosz-Réti, Zsófia; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
My thesis aims to explain the almost unbroken popularity of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim through the lens of irony. The game has several active communities (such as the Reddit pages r/skyrim and r/SkyrimMemes), where posts often mention the game in an ironic tone. In this paper, I suggest that the ironic nature of the conversations and mentions of the game often stem not from the users themselves, but from the ironic elements of the game and that posts about these elements contribute to maintaining an active community. Consequently, I examine the elements of the game that may underlie the irony observed in the posts and propose the introduction of a new concept of irony in video game research: procedural (programming-based) irony. After clarifying what procedural irony is, I also discuss the notion of post-irony, which is mainly linked to the analysis of content about or related to games, since post-ironic content is regularly found among users belonging to online communities. Several examples of irony connected to game mechanics and narrative design are presented in the paper, followed by a discussion of how ironic elements in games are reflected in the content created about the game. Nostalgia also plays a role in sustaining active communities, since nostalgia evoked by ironic content is likely to make players return to play the game repeatedly, thus giving a chance for the active gaming community to survive.

The Great Depression of the 1930s and the Ways of Solving It
Talabos, Ádám Bendegúz; Glant, Tibor; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
In my thesis, I explore the roots of the Great Depression that began in 1929 and two ways of solving it. Firstly, I explain how the stock market crash was only the triggering event of the depression and not the sole cause of it by examining other major contributors to the outbreak of the crisis. After that, I explore how Adolf Hitler acquired power and built a totalitarian state with the help of the Great Depression, and then I talk about how he solidified his power by solving it. In the next chapter, I analyze how the United States handled the Great Depression during the presidencies of Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, how the New Deals stopped the worsening of the crisis, and how they solved it. To conclude my thesis, I explain the crucial similarities and differences between the two ways of solving the problem. The goal of my thesis is to give the reader an accurate image of how the Great Depression shaped the course of history.

Paradigm Shifts in US Reproductive Rights-Related Moral Standards
Nagy, Zoltán; Mathey, Éva; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
This thesis examines the US pre- and post-Roe v. Wade situation and the causes and effects of its overturn in 2022. When the competing moral standards influencing reproductive right-related legislation are examined, it turns out that the advancement in medical sciences and especially knowledge in fetal development, along with sexual education and growing accessibility to affordable contraception methods played a crucial role in tipping the balance towards pro-life moral standards. When examining the causes of protective and restrictive measures of reproductive rights, results show that there is no correlation between the number of recognized abortions carried out per capita and the level of local restrictiveness and that the number of recognized abortions per capita decreases in states providing higher protection of reproductive rights and access to abortion medical care.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of the American Electoral College: a Debate
Lember, Lili; Mathey, Éva; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
Americans have a unique and complex electoral system. The President of the United States is elected by the political body what is known as the Electoral College. The Electoral College system has been the subject to an ongoing debate and criticism for years. Some argue that it is a necessary system, however, the arguments are usually made against the institution. There have been a number of proposals to reform or abolish the Electoral College but none of them has been passed by the Congress. My thesis proposes to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the American Electoral College and attempts to offer an evaluation of the institution.

Kállai, Dorka; Balogh, Máté Gergely; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
The Kennedy family is well-known all around the world, especially in America and the tragic stories around them made people more interested. I found them and their death very interesting, since I have never seen a family, which had this bad luck, since many Kennedy died under special circumstances, and people had this idea, that there is a bad omen or curse on the family. To be able to tell if it is true or not, I am going to analyze two very important political character's death, John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, and the following investigations to see whether their deaths were accidental or something or someone was really behind them.

"Reveal to Them Who You Are": Homosexuality and Transgenderism In Recent Irish Cinema
Kozma, Loretta; Oroszné Gula, Marianna; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
In the past forty years Ireland has undergone a radical transformation from treating homosexuality and transgender identities as forbidden crimes punished by imprisonment – to producing multiple films that depict the radical transformation of social attitudes toward homosexuality in Irish culture. Here I will focus on how the medium of film reflects and reflects on this process by exploring three coming-of-age films from the past twenty years. I will take a closer look at Neil Jordan’s Breakfast on Pluto, (2005), followed by the recent Irish comedy-drama, Dating Amber (2020), directed by David Freyne, and the 2016 coming of age drama Handsome Devil, directed by John Butler.

“Big Brother Is Watching You” – Mass Surveillance by the National Security Agency in the 21st Century
Kelemen, Tibor; Mathey, Éva; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
The aim of my thesis is to prove the hypothesis that the National Security Agency (NSA) has illegally carried out mass surveillance of US and other nationalities. In order to do so, I will present the history of the NSA (including universal and American historical events in which the agency has played a role, such as the Vietnam War or the American Civil Rights Movement), using sources from historians and experts on the history of the intelligence agency. I will also present the currently known structure of the intelligence agency. I will discuss how the intelligence agency's operations have evolved in the post-9/11 period, and finally, I will present how the NSA has carried out illegal surveillance, based on the accounts and evidence of Edward Snowden.

The Green Book and its Effects on Black Communities and Racial Segregation in the United States
Nagy, Zsófia; Mathey, Éva; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
The main focus of my thesis is on The Greek Book and how it affected the lives of African-Americans during the most difficult years of segregation, when Jim Crow laws were in effect. During that time, Black individuals were forced to use separate facilities, were refused to be served by white-owned businesses and discrimination followed their every footstep. However, The Green Book emerged as a lifeline for African-Americans, since it listed establishments that welcomed and catered for people of color. As a result, this handbook had a positive impact on Black mobility, encouraged the appearance of Black-owned businesses and enhanced social life among African-Americans, which aspects are further explored by my work. My thesis also demonstrates the dual nature of segregation—namely that the separation of races in all fields of life was an unjust practice, yet it facilitated the flourishing of Black businesses and social life with the help of The Green Book.

The Analysis of the Columbine Massacre's Coverage and Effects
Pataki, Ágnes; Mathey, Éva; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
This thesis paper intends to examine the impact of the 1999 Columbine massacre on succeeding mass shootings in the United States and how it became a source of inspiration and example for mass murderers. The issue of generalized imitation and contagion, induced by news coverage and improper handling of information about the perpetrators is introduced and analyzed. The historical significance of American gun culture, the problematics of perpetrator-focused media representation, sensationalism and the release of detailed facts about the assailants collectively caused the notoriety and strong influence of the shooting. All contributing factors are investigated in the paper, including parts of the news coverage of the incident, the private writings and home videos of the shooters, and attacks that were inspired by the gunmen. The connection of generalized imitation and the contagion effect, as phenomena connected to the topic, is explained and applied to the shooting.

Liszák, Szabina Brigitta; Mathey, Éva; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar
This research is focusing on air travel and airport security measures after 9/11 attacks. It provides a clear understanding of why these restrictions were implemented and it questions their efficiency. First of all, it provides a clear information of people's attitudes before and after the attacks and also about their awareness and fear-based responses after the tragedy. Moreover, the paper concentrates on the pre-flight restrictions and airport security by analysing its financial consequences and convinience. Last but not least, it gives information about the restrictions that are being considered as a violation of civil rights, focusing on racial profiling and discrimination against Arabs ans Muslims.
